Renovate The Lighting Of A 10,000-square-meter Shopping Mall

In the highly competitive retail environment, lighting is more than just lighting - it is a powerful tool for enhancing the customer experience, highlighting products and reducing operating costs. When a shopping mall in Dubai presented us with an urgent lighting challenge, we provided a tailor-made commercial lighting solution that transformed their space and bottom line. This case study analyzed how we replaced their outdated lighting system with intelligent, flexible and energy-saving solutions, achieving remarkable results for the mall management and tenants.

Project Background

The shopping mall was built in 2015 and uses traditional fluorescent tubes and fixed halogen spotlights. These systems have become a burden for the management and tenants. The main challenges they are facing include:

• Low product visibility: The dim yellow fluorescent light dilutes the color of the products, making clothing, electronic products and cosmetics look dull and lackluster.
• High energy costs: The outdated lighting system consumes 120,000 kilowatt-hours per month, resulting in an energy bill of over 15,000 US dollars - this is one of the largest operating expenses for the shopping mall.
• Rigid layout and high maintenance: When tenants redesign their stores, the fixed halogen spotlights cannot be repositioned. In addition, fluorescent tubes often burn out and require expensive maintenance costs.
• Uncomfortable customer experience: The glare and uneven illumination of halogen spotlights make shopping feel unpleasant.

The goal of the shopping center is clear: to upgrade the lighting system to enhance th e customer experience, reduce energy and maintenance costs, and provide flexibility for tenants, while minimizing disruption to ongoing operations.

Our commercial lighting solution

After a detailed on-site assessment, we designed an overall solution centered on an intelligent magnetic track lighting system and high-color-rendering LED lamps to meet the needs of the shopping mall. This is how we do it:

Flexible magnetic track lights

We chose 48V low-voltage magnetic track lighting as the pillar of the system because of its unparalleled flexibility and ease of use, which is crucial for shopping malls with rotating tenant displays. The main features include:

• Modular lighting fixture combinations: We installed magnetic tracks in public areas and tenant stores and paired them with three types of lighting fixtures: magnetic spotlights for accent lighting, magnetic linear LED lights for ambient lighting, and RGB accent lights for seasonal decoration.
• No tool adjustment required: Tenants can reposition the spotlights or add/remove lighting fixtures within seconds - No electrician is needed.
• Seamless ceiling integration: The track is embedded in the stretched ceiling of the shopping mall (using our custom stretch ceiling aluminum profiles) to achieve a smooth and tidy appearance, eliminating the glare and visual confusion of the old system.

High color rendering LED lamps

All the lamps use high color rendering index LED bulbs, which is a key choice for retail. High color rendering index ensures that colors look realistic: clothes look vibrant, cosmetics match skin tones accurately, and electronic products have a smooth and high-quality appearance. We also adjusted the color temperature by region

• The warm white (3000K) of the fashion and beauty salon creates a comfortable and inviting atmosphere.
• Cold white (6000K) for electronics and home goods stores to highlight product details and clarity.
• The public areas are in natural white (4000K) to create a bright and comfortable shopping environment.

Implementation process: 

One of the biggest concerns for shopping centers is to minimize disturbances to tenants and customers as much as possible. We will carry out this project in two phases within six weeks:

• Phase One (1-2 weeks) : Install magnetic tracks in public areas (only for night shifts, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.) to avoid disturbing daytime shopping.
• Phase Two (Weeks 3-6) : Upgrade the lighting in tenant stores (coordinated with each tenant's non-working hours or low-traffic periods) to ensure zero impact on their sales.

The entire project was completed on time without any complaints from tenants or clients, which is attributed to our detailed planning and night shift execution.

Project achievements

• Tenant sales increased by 18% : Tenant sales rose significantly. High color rendering lighting made the products more attractive, thereby extending customer dwell time and achieving a higher conversion rate.
• Energy costs decreased by 42% : The monthly energy consumption of this shopping mall dropped from 120,000 kilowatt-hours to 69,600 kilowatt-hours, a reduction of 42%. This is equivalent to saving $6,300 in energy per month.
• A 12% increase in foot traffic: The bright, even lighting and comfortable atmosphere attracted more shoppers. Compared with the six months before the renovation, the foot traffic in the shopping mall increased by 12%.
